Hodgepodge of other people’s brilliance

I mentioned in a previous post that I have a habit of making notes on my phone when I hear something that I want to remember for later: a book recommendation, a quote, a website, etc.

But until recently, I didn’t credit the quotes in my notes because I foolishly believed that I would remember to check the note as soon as I got home and would therefore remember what podcast I was listening to.

For your Friday, a collection of quotes that I made a note about without citation. They’re probably from one of the podcasts I’ve quoted properly, but I can’t say for sure. Some of them are over a year old…

(And now I can delete all those notes.)

“Civilization is a race between education and catastrophe.”

“Shake your life Etch-a-Sketch”

“There is no danger that we will fail to experience hardships.”

“Some will. Some won’t. Somewhere, someone’s waiting.”

Because me instead of why me”

“I probably had a little bit more ambition and motivation than I could back up.”

“Consumption inequality went up much less than income inequality” (leading to massive amounts of consumer debt)

“The only way to get better is to leave ‘fine’ behind.”

“Drinking from the fire hose is a really bad way to get hydration.”

“Are you going to race to the top or race to the bottom? The problem with the race to the bottom is that you might win. Or even worse, come in second.” (pretty sure this is Seth Godin)

“This is America, where you’re one paycheck away from living in a tent town.”

“The opposite of play is not work. The opposite of play is depression.”

“The real difference between humans and animals is not on the individual level. It’s on the collective level. Humans control the planet because they are the only animals that can cooperate both flexibly and in very large numbers.”

“You want to be comfortable with what you can do, not feel bad about what you’re not doing.”

“Substitute nuance for novelty.”

“The goal of trauma is to make the echo of it quieter.”

“Some things in life cannot be fixed; they can only be carried.”
