Gaps in the timeline on social media

I have a variety of connections on Facebook. Some of them are people I talk to outside of Facebook; many are not.

Over time, I’ve seen photos of friends with a partner who is not their spouse.

After some trolling of photos, I deduce that they got divorced at some point and this is someone new they’re dating.

While no one is obligated to talk about anything anywhere, it feels weird.

What should replace it? I don’t know. I don’t have an answer—I’m just thinking out loud. I’m sure I’m not the only person who has experienced this.

A similar thing happens when someone announces they’re doing better, but you had no idea they were ever not well. Or they’re mourning someone or something but the posts are vague and you don’t know what’s going on. Or any of a variety of things in this vein.

Social media is kind of like being in the same space as a whole lot of people … but it’s also nothing at all like that.

Have you had any experience like these on social media? What do you think?
